Options for Making Estimated Tax Payments to the IRS

Direct Pay on IRS.gov

Option 1: Pay Using IRS Direct Pay (from a bank account)

  1. Go to the official payment page:
    https://www.irs.gov/payments
  2. Click “Direct Pay”.
  3. Select:
    • Reason for payment: Estimated Tax
    • Apply payment to: 1040ES (Estimated Tax)
    • Tax period: Choose the current tax year (e.g., 2026).
  4. Verify your identity by entering:
    • Name
    • Social Security Number
    • Date of birth
    • Filing status
    • Address from a previous tax return
  5. Enter your bank routing number and account number.
  6. Enter the payment amount.
  7. Choose payment date (you can schedule the payment for the due date).

Review and submit.
Save or print the confirmation number.

Fee: Free

Option 2: Pay Through Your IRS Online Account

  1. Go to https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
  2. Sign in or create an account with the Internal Revenue Service.
  3. Click “Make a Payment.”
  4. Select Estimated Tax (Form 1040-ES).
  5. Choose payment method (bank account or card).
  6. Confirm and submit.

On the payments page you can choose Pay by Card through IRS-approved processors like:

  • PayUSAtax
  • Pay1040
  • ACI Payments, Inc.

⚠️ Card payments charge a processing fee (~1.8–2%).
