Thought Leader in Tax & Accounting

Melisse is a thought leader on key provisions of the most recent Tax Reform Act including Opportunity Zones, which provide potential tax advantages for use of capital gains in unexpected geographical areas and Section 163J, which limits deductions for business interest. 

One of Burstein’s clients was among the first to take advantage of the Opportunity Zone program giving her first-hand experience with the regulations and requirements.

She also lectures frequently on financial literacy and corporate finance to help small business owners and others better understand fiscal operations and personal economics.

Melisse Burstein is a partner with Gerson Preston and an experienced accounting professional who has participated in the vibrant growth and global sophistication changing South Florida’s economy through the representation of clients in the region’s most important industries, including real estate, hospitality, and construction. She is a subject matter expert on several topics including Domestic & International Taxation, Real Estate Transactions, Business Valuation, Transfer Pricing, Opportunity Zone, and Litigation Support For over 25 years, Ms. Burstein’s clients have relied on her as a trusted business advisor. Melisse Burstein has extensive experience in business valuation for estate planning purposes, providing clients with accurate and defensible valuations to optimize wealth transfer strategies and comply with tax regulations. She also conducts comprehensive transfer pricing studies to ensure compliance with domestic and international tax laws, helping clients manage intercompany transactions effectively while minimizing risks. Her expertise in these areas allows her to deliver practical solutions tailored to each client’s unique needs. Her broad experience, hands-on approach, and background as an auditor with Ernst & Young enables her to see the big picture with a laser-like focus on the details.

She is on the Professional Advisors Committee for United Way of Miami-Dade County, on the Miami Beach JCC Fitness and Finance Committee, and a member of the New York and Florida State Society of Certified Public Accountants. She also has AICPA Accreditation in Business Valuation and has an AICPA Certification in Financial Forensics. 

Melisse graduated from Skidmore College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in business. She graduated from Northeastern University with a Master of Science degree in accounting. She has also been named a South Florida Legal Guide Top Litigation Support Professional and a South Florida Business Journal Up & Comer.
